The Sloth Sanctuary in Costa Rica needs help!

With almost 150 Sloths in their care, The Sloth Sanctuary is reaching capacity and needs to release more rescued animals back into the wild. In order to ensure these animals are thriving, biologist Rebecca Cliffe is raising money for GPS tracking equipment that will allow staff to monitor the released animals. This will also provide critical data in support of the Sloth Backpack Project, which seeks to better understand sloth diet, habitat preferences and reproductive habits. Learn more about this effort and contribute to Save Our Sloths on Indiegogo.

Her name is Tortellini and she’s available for adoption through One Love Animal Hospital in Brooklyn. She was abandoned in an empty apartment by her previous owners. Tortellini would do best as an only cat. Here is her Petfinder ad.

Ok y’all, I adore tortoiseshell cats. And this one’s name is TORTELLINI. So perfect. Reading her ad, she sounds like an amazing cat. Anyway, signal boosting for anyone in that area.

I really don’t know what to do about this dog. She showed up a few days ago and hasn’t really left my porch since. She’s made this tiny ass chair on my porch her bed, and sits in that thing almost all day unless she’s chasing cats, or laying in the sun… She’s like a guard dog who’s decided to adopt ME.

I’ve done my best to provide her water and whatever dog-safe scraps I can scrounge up… But she very obviously needs both a bath, and nutritional rehab and I can’t take her in because of my landlord and boyfriend both saying “no pets”.

I can’t keep up feeding her scraps to begin with. Bryan’s starting to notice our leftovers going missing and he said something about it yesterday that hinted he thinks it’s going to the dog.

The problem is, she’s obviously part pitbul. I have a soft spot for pits because I used to breed and raise them. They’re wonderful dogs. Unfortunately, I live in Oklahoma and Oklahoma is most certainly NOT a pit-friendly state despite all evidence that they’re unlike any other breed.

Around here, they don’t even get a chance in shelters. No-kill, or otherwise. I repeat: IN MY STATE EVEN NO KILL SHELTERS WILL FLAT OUT REFUSE TO TAKE THEM OR WILL SEND THEM TO A KILL SHELTER TO BE EUTHANIZED. A shelter, any shelter, is out of the question in my state, and obtaining papers that state she is a different breed is neither a luxury I can afford to do, nor something that will make a difference. Oklahoma shelters will either euthanize or just flat out not take anything that even remotely LOOKS like a pit. I’ve tried Pit rescue groups in my area, but half of them don’t have any listed contact information, and the other half aren’t taking animals right now. My last hope for a Pit rescue group that could take her has not responded to my phone calls at all.

Other than a good bath and some obvious nutritional rehab, she’s a healthy, active, and very happy and playful dog. I had her sit to take the last picture. She understands “sit”, “stay”, “come”  and “lay down”. Judging by the way she’s tried to follow Bryan and I into the house every time we come in, I’d say she used to also be an inside pet. There’s definitely no way in hell she’s a recently abandoned stray, judging on her thinness. She’s been abandoned or out for a while, wandering.

I couldn’t justify allowing a shelter to kill her, but I can’t take care of her. I don’t need advice on what to do with her. I don’t need another suggestion for “shelters” or “rescue groups”. I’ve tried everything. She needs a home, and if you’re in the Tulsa, Oklahoma area, I beg you to come take her in.

Save Dutch the Service Dog

An Army Veteran with disabilities is asking for the public’s help in saving his service dog, Dutch, from court-ordered euthanasia. After being punched, kicked, and hit with a metal pole for several minutes, Dutch bit his attacker and has now been accused of being a “vicious” dog.

Dutch is a 4-year-old American Allaunt, who is a registered service dog and an important part of Jeremy Aguilar’s life. Dutch has never shown any aggressive behavior before or after the incident and is a certified AKC Canine Good Citizen.

Jeremy served in the Army, and fought in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He also was also deployed to Hurricane Katrina with the Oklahoma National Guard, which was the first unit to show up. Dutch came into Jeremy’s life a month after he married his wife Heather three years ago. Heather says that Dutch has been “the most therapeutic thing that could have ever happened” to her husband.

The Incident

On November 14, 2012, Jeremy and Heather left Dutch with his former owner in Montrose, Colorado, while they drove a family member to the airport.

According to Heather, Dutch’s former owner admitted to animal control officers and in court that she was beating Dutch before he bit her.

Heather says that Dutch’s former owner said, “I started punching him in the face and kept punching him until my hands hurt so bad I couldn’t hit him anymore,” after which she grabbed a metal pole and used the pole to beat the service dog. She then pulled Dutch from her backyard into the house by his collar, and grabbed his mouth as soon as they got inside. Dutch then bit her. The woman was bitten on her leg and buttock and Dutch sustained injuries to his face and head.

The bent metal pole seen above was found in the back yard belonging to Dutch’s former owner.

Dutch’s Injuries

After the incident, Dutch was taken to a veterinarian who evaluated Dutch’s wounds. The veterinarian’s report stated:

Vet statement from Dutch's examFace swollen like he was hit. Extensive ST trauma on left side of face. Swelling extends from nose up to eye and base of ear. Some dried blood noted on dog’s fur but no wounds apparent in mouth or on face/body.

Note - dog was extremely well-mannered and sweet in exam room. He did not require restraint during his exam, even when his abdomen, testicles and swollen face were palpated.

The Aguilars say that when they saw Dutch after the incident, his eyes were swollen shut and his snout had swelled to three times its normal size.

Dutch’s Temperament

In addition to the veterinarian who evaluated Dutch’s wounds (see above), other animal experts have stepped forward to commend Dutch for his temperament.

Carrie Williams is a highly recognized and experienced retired dog trainer and evaluator who has evaluated for organizations including Therapy Dogs International (TDI) and the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) Canine Good Citizen Program (CGC).

“In my testing of dogs for TDI and the AKC and as a dog obedience instructor, I have dealt with a number of aggressive dogs. Dutch was not one of those dogs.”, Carrie says ”Dutch is a sweetheart. In 26 years of training dogs, he is one of the nicest dogs I’ve ever come across. That is why I’m volunteering my time to try and save his life.”

Legal Battle

Dutch’s former owner has pressed charges against Jeremy and Dutch through the City of Montrose animal control office in Colorado. Photos admitted to court showed that the woman’s puncture wounds from Dutch’s bite did not have tears of the skin. In addition, the woman did not receive stitches for them.

Jeremy was cited with municipal ordinance 6-2-9 (A), Vicious animals. Under this ordinance, “A vicious animal is defined as any animal that, without provocation, bites or attacks persons or other animals.” Heather says that although the judge agreed that Dutch was provoked, the ordinance applies to Dutch’s case because he did not bite his former owner until they went inside the home and the beating occurred outside of the home. The judge ruled Dutch’s bite a separate circumstance from his beating and there is now an active euthanization order for Dutch.

Ordinance 6-2-9 (A), Vicious animals carries the possibility of one year in jail. Since Dutch is currently under the care of the Aguilars, a Colorado judge ordered Jeremy to post a $500 appearance bond. The judge warned Jeremy that if he doesn’t surrender Dutch, the combat veteran will absolutely spend the whole year in jail.

Jeremy and Heather offered to send Dutch through a rehabilitation program, agreeing to the judge that if the evaluator considered Dutch aggressive, that they would surrender him. The Aguilars say that the judge told them that would only be allowed if Dutch’s former owner would agree to it. Dutch’s former owner refused to agree to the Aguilars’ offer.

 Current Status

Dutch’s next court date is February 14, 2013 at 10:30 am (City of Montrose municipal court). At that time, the Aguilars will learn how much of a fine and restitution they will have to pay to court and to Dutch’s former owner. They will also find out if Jeremy will be sent to jail. But most importantly, they will have to surrender Dutch. The court has asked that they surrender Dutch to animal control before the court date.

The Aguilars are continuing Dutch’s training in the hopes that if the judge does force them to surrender their beloved dog, that they can appeal the decision. Their primary concern leading up to the court date next week is to get the euthanasia order stopped to save Dutch’s life.

If you would like to help Dutch, Jeremy and Heather, here is what you can do:

A reminder of who Marissa Alexander is and why this is an urgent issue:

PARDON MARISSA ALEXANDER WHO WAS JAILED FOR 20 YEARS IN FLORIDA FOR TRYING TO PROTECT HERSELF AGAINST AN ABUSIVE EX-

Marissa Alexander was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Marissa is the victim here. Her husband beat her while she was pregnant. After yet another beating, Alexander fired a warning shot which traveled through a wall and into the ceiling. That shot saved her life. She didn’t kill anyone. Prosecutor Angela Corey did not take into account that Marissa Alexander had a court injunction against her crazed husband. She had given birth 9 Days earlier and was trained to use a weapon and earned a concealed weapons permit. Whilst the Stand Your Ground Law has been successfully used by other people in the State of Florida, that law didn’t apply to Marissa Alexander although she was a victim of Domestic Abuse.

Introducing Black Is NOT A Crime.: A Police Accountability Project

blackcanadians:

***PLEASE CIRCULATE WIDELY***

Dear members and allies of the African Canadian community:

Introducing Black Is NOT A Crime.: A Police Accountability Project

The issue of racial profiling is once again on the agenda of the Toronto Police Services Board (“TPSB”). On January 23, 2013 at 1:30pm at Toronto Police Services (“TPS”) Headquarters, 40 College Street, the TPSB will once again meet to address anti-Black racism by the TPS.

As many of you know, at the November meeting of the TPSB, many community members were denied entry and/or barred from sharing their concerns with the Board. (For more information visit: http://metronews.ca/news/toronto/440598/toronto-police-board-delays-issuing-street-check-receipts/)

Black Is NOT A Crime. (“BINAC”), a new project aimed at addressing and ending racial profiling by the police in Ontario, offers a creative and powerful way for our voices to be heard.

If you visit www.blackisnotacrime.ca, and purchase a BINAC t-shirt, tank top and/or hooded sweatshirt, you can speak out against the practice of racial profiling without having to say a word. Those of you who purchase BINAC merchandise can also sign up to receive updates on upcoming meetings and events aimed at ensuring that the people who are most directly impacted by the discriminatory practices of the TPS and other police services take an active role in putting and end to the practice.

ALL of the proceeds from the sale of the BINAC merchandise will go towards developing a number of public information initiatives and innovative tools aimed at increasing police accountability and ending racial profiling once and for all. Visit www.blackisnotacrime.ca in the coming months to learn more.

Background

“Racial profiling is criminal profiling based on race. Racial or colour profiling refers to that phenomenon whereby certain criminal activity is attributed to an identified group in society on the basis of race or colour resulting in the targeting of individual members of that group. In this context, race is illegitimately used as a proxy for the criminality or general criminal propensity of an entire racial group.”
- R. v. Richards, 1999 CanLII 1602 (ON CA)

The phenomenon of racial profiling and/or racial discrimination by police services in Ontario has been documented in numerous studies and reports, including the Arthur Maloney Report (1975), the Report of the Race Relations and Policing Task Force (1989), the Stephen Lewis Report on Race Relations (1992), the Commission on Systemic Racism in the Criminal Justice System (1995), and the Report of the Board/Service Race Relations Joint Working Group (2002). While every report has made recommendations, and police services have undertaken training to address this issue, the phenomenon continues to occur at an alarming rate.
In March 2012, the Toronto Star published a news series detailing the prevalence of anti-Black racism in policing. The Star reported that if you are African Canadian and you do something wrong — use illegal drugs, drive without car insurance — your chances of getting caught are much greater than your white counterpart. Specifically,

African Canadians make up 8.4% of Toronto’s population but account for 3 times as many contacts with police;
African Canadian males aged 15-24 are stopped and documented 2.5 times more than white males;
differences between African Canadian and white carding rates are highest in more affluent, mostly white areas of the city.

As a result of public outcry in response to the Star series, this issue was again placed on the agenda of the Toronto Police Services Board.

In April 2012, the TPSB requested that the City of Toronto Auditor General analyze disaggregated race-based data, provide quarterly reports and make recommendations to the TPSB. Further, Chief William Blair was ordered by the TPSB to provide carbon copies of “contact” or “208” cards to every individual for which information is collected.

At the July 2012 TPSB meeting, Chief Blair requested an extension of time to determine the feasibility of providing carbon copies. At the August 2012 TPSB meeting, in response to community pressure, the TPSB ordered the Service to adopt interim measures to address this issue (e.g. the provision of receipts or business cards to each person ‘carded’).

At the November 2012 TPSB meeting, the Board decided that Chief Blair should report to its next meeting on the form of the receipt and on 208 cards in general. Ultimately, while the Chief did submit a report in December, the TPSB decided that it would be more appropriate to consider the report at its January 2013 meeting as opposed to rushing it in December without any public notice. The TPSB is scheduled to meet on 23 January 2013 at 1:30pm at TPS Headquarters, 40 College Street, Toronto.

In solidarity,
Black Is NOT A Crime.

This is my friend Mary and her cat, Padfoot. She rescued this little baby, and was originally given permission to keep him on her semi off-campus apartment. Since then, Padfoot has become essential to her mental health and overall well being.

Unfortunately, things changed this weekend. Mary has been given 24 hours to relocate Padfoot, but she can’t find any place for him to stay. She is inconsolable  because at this point, it looks like she will have to leave Padfoot at a shelter.

If there is anyone in Ferrum, VA area (or as far out as North Virginia and Greensboro, NC) that would be able to temporarily house Padfoot, we would be eternally grateful! I know a lot of you understand just how important companion animals are, especially to those who (like Mary) do not have a support network of friends or family.

Padfoot is a one-year old Maine Coon. He is healthy and up-to-date on all of his shots. He is very friendly and docile. He would also come with some basic supplies (litterbox, remaining food, ect).
