Was girlarchaeologist on the ladyblog. Archaeologist turned museum worker. Cat lady. I post about archaeology and history in movies and tv, along with a hearty sprinkling of cats, otters, penguins, Doctor Who, comics, cemeteries, random photos and sundry and assorted thoughts.

I have another blog, travelswithmyastromech.tumblr.com, where I post peculiar little photos of Star Wars figures. Everyone needs a hobby.

Angelina Jolie had a double mastectomy, in case you hadn’t heard. How dare she remove those ticking time bombs from her chest, amiright? Like, hasn’t she learned by now that her body is public domain and we all get to vote on what she does with it? Sheesh, how selfish can ya get.

the-puzzle-that-put-you-to-tears:

The message of Twilight is indeed to find love. And to stay with that love even if it is physically, mentally or emotionally damaging to you. The messages of Harry Potter are the importance of friendship, love (not necessarily romantic), intelligence (not necessarily of the book kind), courage (which can be the smallest thing imaginable) and acceptance.

Harry Potter actually tells us how to make important decisions. It tells us that sometimes you will face problems that are about more than just you. It tells you that sometimes you have to be selfless. And that sometimes you have to be selfish.

Harry Potter is about a group of smart, courageous, loving, wonderful characters trying to defeat Lord Voldemort. Which, by the way, is a metaphor for the power of friendship and love. Harry Potter tells us that friendship is so, so much more important than power.

Harry Potter is absolutely beautifully written, and the character development is the best I’ve ever seen. If you want an example, take Neville Longbottom. Over the course of seven years and seven books, he changes from a scared, shy, self-deprecating little boy who thinks he’s useless into a brave, resilient, intelligent, self-sacrificing and self-confident young man.

Harry Potter got eight movies, the last book was split into two because there is too much important and intricate detail to fit into one movie. The last Twilight book was split into two movies in an attempt to copy Harry Potter in order to make more money.

Edward and Jacob, as far as I can tell, are rather flat characters. I’m not really in a  position to judge here. Ron Weasley also has some frankly amazing character development. He makes mistakes, he acknowledges them and he learns from them.

Hermione Granger is wonderful. She is intelligent, compassionate, loyal, dependable, and brave. And one of the most wonderful things about her is that she knows it. She knows that she’s good. She doesn’t moon around pretending to dislike herself, she just gets on with her life. But the absolute best thing about Hermione Granger is that she didn’t let romantic love take over her life. When the love of her life left, she kept going. She didn’t shut down.

That is why Harry Potter is and always will be the best, most wonderful, most brilliant book series of all time.

Archaeological News: Tutankhamun’s death and the birth of monotheism

archaeologicalnews:

TUTANKHAMUN’S mysterious death as a teenager may finally have been explained. And the condition that cut short his life may also have triggered the earliest monotheistic religion, suggests a new review of his family history.

Since his lavishly furnished, nearly intact tomb was discovered in…

#gurl NO. If you actually look at the physical remains, the mummies, of these individuals, they are physically normal. Tutankhamun did have a whole mess of health problems, quite possibly stemming from that age-old tradition of royal inbreeding, but other than that he’s fine. The famous Amarna period art was just that…art. There weren’t actually weird lady-men wandering around Egypt during the 18th dynasty and you’ll notice that once Tutankhamun dies, that style of art pretty quickly goes away and everything returns to the familiar style (and old time Amun-based religion) that existed before Akhenaten gained the throne. Peoples exhibit A: Tutankhamun was actually given the name of Tutankhaten and changed it to ‘amun’ once his father died and the Amun priesthood muscled their way back into power. They wanted to forget about that whole ‘Aten’ thing and return to the traditional polytheistic Amun-centric faith (and also regain their high level of influence over the royal family and general ruling matters). The only thing Tutankhamun’s death inspired in Egypt at the time was a sense of panic (as there was no tomb ready for him so they just used one that was more or less finished) and upon his re-discovery, a sense of wonder and fascination with Ancient Egypt.

TL;DR Atenism, the monotheistic religion in question here, was started by Tutankhamun’s father, Akhenten. Upon his death, everybody went back to their regularly scheduled religion and no one actually looked like alien lady-men. The End.

It’s Not A Spoiler, It’s In The Trailer
More importantly, I’m increasingly annoyed by the fact that Hollywood has completely given up on the notions of plot and development.  Movies are basically just concept and climax at this point.  You expect to get taken out to dinner and instead you end up with a quick and dirty hookup.  Prometheus was very well-made and visually exceptional, but the first half of the movie is set-up and exposition, and the entire second half is basically one long climax sequence.  If you take the time to put a little character development in between the two, we might actually give a shit when the main characters start kicking the bucket.
